Blueberries

Highbush Blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum) are native to North America from Minnesota eastward, and are the species most often cultivated.  There are a number of other varieties now grown in the East and West as well as in Chile and Canada.

Blueberries, especially wild species, contain antioxidants which have been found to reduce the risks of some cancers. Studies found that blueberry consumption lowered cholesterol and other blood lipid levels, possibly affecting symptoms of heart disease. Fresh blueberries contain 3 g of fibre. Additionally blueberries are high in manganese as well as vitamin K and have a low glycemic load and are a source of vitamin C and iron.
